The Freeport Black Sox grabbed the final seat available at the Region 8C table with a 7-4 win at Nisswa Saturday night in the North Division elimination round.    Having lost both previous visits to City Park, including a 7-1 loss in the opening round of the playoffs just a week ago.  With the season on the line for both teams,it was Nisswa that jumped ahead early on Jeremiah Piepkorn's 1st inning 2-run homer over the wall in center.  That turned out to be a mere foreshadowing of the huge night for Piepkorn.  Freeport lefty Josh Vorpahl turned in his longest outing of the season by far against Nisswa, going 7 innings with 11 strikeouts to record the victory.  His previous high had come back on May 25th when he worked 4 2/3 innings of relief in a loss to St. Mathias.  With the score still 2-0 in favor of the Lightning after 2 innings, the Black Sox broke through against Nisswa starter Kyle Schaible in the top of the 3rd.  It began with Eric Evaslage reaching on an error.  Carter Sawyer then pushed a perfect bunt towards 3rd for a single with Evaslage advancing to 3rd on the play.  Chad Hess then lined an rbi single to left to make it 2-1.  After a pop up to catcher Morgan Shepherd for the 1st out and 2 men on base, Troy Frieler crushed an 0-1 pitch from Schaible for a 3-run homer and Freeport had a 4-2 lead.  That homer knocked Schaible out of the ballgame as Nisswa brought in Lincoln Messner to relieve.  Messner got out of the inning without any further damage done.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Piepkorn hit his 2nd homer of the game, a solo shot leading off the inning to make it 4-3.  Neither team scored in the 4th.  Nisswa brought in Luke Schumer to pitch in the 5th inning.  Schumer had thrown 1 2/3 innings in relief the previous night against Ft. Ripley.  Schumer got Troy Frieler to line out to center, then Ryan Tschida cracked a double of the center field fence.  A wild pitch moved Tschida to 3rd with 1 out.  Nisswa brought the infield in to cut off the run and Schumer got Jason Tschida to ground out to 2nd for the 2nd out,  Schumer then hit Erik Freeman with a pitch to put runners at the corners with 2 outs.  That brought up #9 hitter Nate Mettenburg, who had struck out in his 2 previous at-bats in the game.  Schumer quickly got ahead 0-2 in the count, but Mettenburg patiently worked the count full and then took ball 4 to load the bases. Eric Evaslage then laced a bases-clearing double to left-center and the Black Sox suddenly had a 7-3 lead.  It looked like Nisswa had something going in both the 5th and 6th innings against Vorpahl, but the veteran was able to strand 2 runners in scoring position in the 5th, and after issuing 2 walks to start the 6th, he got a strikeout and an inning-ending double play grounder to 3rd to get out of trouble.  In the bottom of the 7th, Vorpahl got 2 quick outs, but then Piepkorn came up and belted his 3rd homer of the game, another solo homer to make it 7-4.  2 more singles and a walk followed to load the bases, but Vorpahl got a fly out to left to end the inning.  Freeport left runners at the corners in their half of the 8th.  The Black Sox brought in Peter Burg to take over for Vorpahl to start the bottom of the 8th and Burg got 3 fly outs to the outfield for quick half inning.  Schumer retired Freeport in order in the 9th so the Lightning had 1 more shot at it, trailing by 3 heading to their final at-bat.  Aaron Jenkins lined out to center to lead things off.  Piepkorn followed with a double.  Burg fanned Adam Hardy for the 2nd out but then walked Luke Schumer.  Tyler Wittwer's grounder to the hole at short was misplayed and the Lightning had the bases loaded with 2 outs.  Burg finished things off by getting Mark Germain to ground out to 2nd to end the ballgame, and preserve the 7-4 Freeport win.  The loss ends the year for Nisswa.  It also means that both of last years North representatives to the Region 8C tournament failed to return in 2013, as both Nisswa and St. Mathias failed to make it out of the Divisional playoff round this year.  The Black Sox clinch a Region 8C berth and will play at Ft. Ripley on Sunday for the North Division playoff title.  The Black Sox need to beat the Rebels twice Sunday in order to garner the top seed out of the North.  Game 1 will begin at 1:00 with a 2nd game to follow if necessary.
