In a winner-take-all game for the regular season East Division Title in Buckman on Saturday, the Lastrup Lakers and Buckman Billygoats put on a great show for a big crowd, and in the end, it was Lastrup handing Buckman their first loss of the year with an 8-4 win.
Buckman entered the final day of the regular season with a record of 12-0 while Lastrup was 11-1, with their only setback being a 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Billygoats on May 6th.  The two teams combined had won their last 22 games!  In the top of the 1st, Jeremy Monson worked a 1-2-3 frame on just 8 pitches.  Buckman then scored the games first run in the bottom of the 1st when Matt Tautges led off with a single and scored from 1st on Aaron Weber's rbi double to make it 1-0.  Lakers starter Chad Weiss then walked Noah Boser to put 2 men on base with no outs, but got a big double play started by 1st baseman Dan Saehr on the 3-6-1 play.  Weiss then got a strikeout to strand Weber at 3rd to end the 1st.  In the top of the 2nd, Pete Herman led off with a double, but Monson kept there with 3 fly outs to maintain the Billygoats 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the 2nd, Shawn Lanners doubled to the right-center gap with 1 out, but Weiss stranded him there with a line out to 3rd and a fly out to left to complete the 2nd inning.  In the top of the 3rd, Preston Rocheleau led off with a single to right, bringing up Reese Kapsner.  His sacrifice bunt was bobbled for an error, allowing both runners to be safe.  Chad Weiss then put down a bunt as well, and he also was safe at 1st as the throw pulled Buckman 1st baseman Joe Kahl off the bag and Lastrup had the bases loaded with no outs.  Paul Herman tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Rocheleau and it was 1-1.  Brad Meyer then hit a grounder that was misplayed for the Goats 3rd error of the inning and the bases were loaded again.  Pete Herman put Lastrup ahead with a sacrifice fly to center, with Kapsner scoring the go-ahead run to make it 2-1 before Monson and the Goats finally got out of the inning on a pop out in foul territory.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Buckman answered right back.  Aaron Weber tied the game at 2-2 with a 1-out solo Homer to deep left-center.  In the top of the 4th, Lastrup regained the lead again when Dan Saehr lined a single to lead off and then stole 2nd.  After Monson got a strikeout, Preston Rocheleau dropped a single into right field and Lastrup had runners at the corners with 1 out.  Reese Kapsner executed a perfect squeeze bunt, scoring Saehr easily and the Lakers led 3-2.  In the bottom of the 4th, Jeremy Monson singled up the middle with 1 out, but then Dan Saehr started his second double play of the game, fielding a grounder by Shawn Lanners, touching 1st and firing to shortstop Preston Rocheleau to apply the tag on Monson and end the 4th with Lastrup still up 3-2.  In the top of the 5th, Monson allowed a lead-off double for the second time in the game, this time to Paul Herman.  But just like 2nd inning, Monson worked around that 2-base hit by getting a ground out, a fly out and an inning-ending strikeout to leave Herman at 3rd.  Inn the bottom of the 5th, Travis Kahl reached base on a 1-out walk but again it was a double play started by Dan Saehr that ended the inning as Saehr caught a line drive off the bat of Matt Tautges and then tagged Kahl before he could get back to 1st.  After 5 full innings, Lastrup still held their 3-2 lead.  Monson worked quickly through the top of the 6th, needing just 7 pitches in his second 1-2-3 inning.  In the bottom of the 6th, Aaron Weber led off with a walk from Weiss, and then successfully swiped 2nd.  Weiss then got a line out and a pop out to 3rd.  That brought up Joe Kahl, who singled with 2 outs into center to bring home Weber with the tying run and it was 3-3 after 6 innings.  Leading off the top of the 7th, Lastrup's Reese Kapsner punched a single into right and the Billygoats opted to bring in Matt Tautges to relieve Monson.  Buckman catcher Matt Kummet came up with a big defensive play, catching a foul pop up off the bat of Chad Weiss with a full extension diving catch up the 1st base line for the 1st out.  Paul Herman then singled, followed by a Tautges strikeout.  With 2 on and 2 outs, Pete Herman singled to left to score Kapsner and Lastrup was back in front 4-3 at the 7th inning stretch.  In the bottom of the 7th, Lastrup went to the bullpen as well, bringing in Preston Rocheleau to pitch.  He got a strikeout to the first batter he faced but then allowed a single to Lane Girtz.  After Lane stole 2nd, Rocheleau picked up another strikeout for out #2.  Matt Tautges then ripped double to deep right that scored Girtz, once again tying the game at 4-4.  Rocheleau then ended things there with his 3rd strikeout of the inning.  In the top of the 8th, Lastrup put the 1st two batters aboard courtesy of walks.  After Tautges got a strikeout, he then walked Reese Kapsner to load the bases with 1 out.   Buckman then called up Mark Kahl to take over from Tautges to try and get out of the inning.  And he almost did.  He got Chad Weiss to hit a grounder to 3rd baseman Shawn Lanners, who fired to the plate to force out pinch-runner Isaac Otte, but the throw to 1st to attempt to complete the double play was high and down the right field line, allowing Nate Janson to score form 2nd and put Lastrup ahead 5-4.  Kahl then got a line drive to Lanners at 3rd to end the inning.  In the bottom of the 8th, Preston Rocheleau set the Goats down in order on a grounder to short, a pop to short and then Joe Kahl lifted fly ball to deep center field, where Nate Janson was able to have just enough room in front of the fence to make the inning-ending catch.  With the game headed to the top of the 9th with Lastrup holding the 5-4 lead, Brad Meyer took a lead-off walk and then stole 2nd.  The Lakers then ripped 3 consecutive run scoring singles by Pete Herman, Reggie Litke and Dan Saehr to grow the lead to 8-4 before the Lakers were finally retired in the 9th.  3 outs from capturing the East Division crown, Preston Rocheleau made sure that Buckman would not get even the beginnings of a rally going, striking out the 1st two batter and then ending the game with a fly out to left fielder Reese Kapsner to secure the Lakers 8-4 win.  Both Lastrup and Buckman end the regular season with identical 12-1 records, prompting the tiebreaker procedure to go into effect.  The first tiebreaker is head-to-head results and the two teams split with each other. The second tiebreaker is Division Record, and both teams went 7-1 in the East with the losses coming to each other.  The third tiebreaker is Runs Scored in Head-to-head games and that's where Lastrup has the edge.  Buckman won the first game in May 6-5 with Lastrup winning 8-4 on Saturday, so that tiebreaker is 13-10 in the Lakers favor.  So Lastrup enters the East Division Playoffs as the #1 seed and will host the #4 seed Pierz Bulldogs i the first round.  Buckman will be the #2 seed and will host the #3 seed Pierz Brewers.  The regular season Division Title also guarantees that the Lakers get a spot in the Region 8C Tournament, joining South Champion Avon and West Champion Sobieski as automatic qualifiers.  Only the North has yet to be clinched.
