With nothing to play for except pride, the St. Wendel Saints closed their 2018 season on a high note with a 7-6 win over the St. Stephen Steves on Saturday in front of the home crowd.  Sam Butler had himself quite a day for St. Wendel, not only throwing a Complete Game to get the Win, but Butler also went 4-4 with a double on offense.  The big inning in the game for St. Wendel came in the bottom of the 5th when John Pogatchnik launched a Grand Slam Homer to put the Saints ahead 5-3 and then Lee Maciej slammed a solo Homer of his own to go back-to back.   For the Steves, Blake Guggenberger and Ben Omann both doubled and Homered in the game.  St. Wendel ends the year with a record of 4-9 and in 5th Place in the South Division, 1 game behind #4 seed Opole.  Both St. Stephen and Freeport go through the regular season with identical 7-6 records so to determine the #2 and #3 seeds in the upcoming South Playoffs, we must refer to the Victory League Tie Breaker system.  The 1st tiebreaker is head-to-head and that's even as the two squads split their season series.  Tiebreaker #2 is Division record and both the Steves and Black Sox went 4-4. The 3rd tiebreaker is where the Steves hold the advantage, and that is Runs Scored in Head-to-head games.  Freeport won the first meeting 6-5, but St. Stephen took the second game 8-1, so the Steves win the 3rd tiebreaker 13-7, meaning St. Stephen is the South #2 seed and will host #3 Freeport in the opening round of South Division Playoff action next weekend.
