The Buckman Billygoats advances to the Sweet 16 of the 2018 Class C State Tournament with a 7-5 win over Region 13 Champion Hadley on Saturday in Shakopee.  Nate DeChaine, a draftee from the Nisswa Lightning, earned his 2nd Win of the Tournament by hurling 6 innings, scattering 4 runs on 5 hits.  Mark Kahl pitched the final 3 innings to earn a Save for Buckman.  DeChaine got some brilliant defense behind him early n the game, most notably from 2nd baseman Lane Girtz.  Girtz was responsible for the 1st two outs of the game in the 1st inning with a diving stop of a hard-hit grounder into shallow right field and then he made a leaping catch of a line drive for the second out.  DeChaine allowed a 2-out double but then got a ground out to shortstop Jack Suska to end the scoreless 1st inning.  In the top of the 2nd, the Billygoats struck for 3 runs against the Buttermakers starter Brandan Alfson, a draftee from Pipestone.  After a lead-off strikeout, Noah Boser collected an infield single.  Matt Kummet then lined a single to right to give Buckman runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out.  After another strikeout, Jack Suska filled the bases with an infield single of his own.  Travis Kahl then took a 4-pitch walk to force home Boser to make it 1-0.  But the Goats weren’t done as both Matt Tautges and Lane Girtz followed with run-scoring infield singles to plate Kummet and Suska to make it 3-0.  In the bottom of the 2nd, Lane Girtz made another leaping catch to rob the Buttermakers of a hit.  Hadley managed a 2-out single off DeChaine but that was it, as he enduced an inning-ending force out at 2nd. In the Buckman top of the 3rd, the Billygoats were retired in order on just 8 pitches from Alfson.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Hadley broke through for 2 runs off DeChaine.  Buckman committed two errors in the frame, scoring their first run on a miscue and then getting an rbi single from Blake Rogers to make it 3-2 after 3 innings.  Buckman failed to score in the 4th despite loading the bases on singles by Jack Suska and Travis Kahl and a walk to Lane Girtz. Alfson stranded all 3 runners with a strikeout.  The Buttermakers got a 2-our walk in their half of the 4th, but a soft liner to Jack Suska at shortstop ended the inning.  The Billygoats increased their lead to 5-2 in the 5th when both Joe Kahl and Noah Boser collected hits to start the inning.  After a wild pitch, Matt Kummet then bounced a grounder to shortstop that was misplayed for an error, scoring Kahl and allowing both Boser and Kummet to reach safely.  Mark Kahl then advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.  Jack Suska’s sacrifice fly allowed Boser to score and Buckman led 5-2.  DeChaine issued a 1-out walk to DH Nick Bruning in the bottom of the 5th but Matt Kummet threw him out attempting to steal to clear the bases and DeChaine then fanned Blake Rogers to finish off the 5th.  Hadley went to their bullpen to start the 6th, bringing in a lefthander, Ryan Christopher.  Christopher is a draftee from Lakefield. In the top of the 6th, Buckman tacked on another 2 runs, with Matt Tautges greeting the new pitcher with a triple to right-center.  Lane Girtz then muscled a single into Centerfield to plate Tautges and make it 6-2.  After Girtz was caught in a rundown and tagged out on a pickoff play, Aaron Weber walked on 4 pitches.  The Billygoats used Alex Funk as a pinch-runner for Weber at 1st.  After Christopher registered a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Noah Boser blasted a double to deep center, as Funk raced home from 1st to give the Billygoats a 7-2 lead.  The Buttermakers responded with 2 runsbof their own in the bottom of the 6th, again aided by 2 Buckman errors and an rbi single to make it 7-4 after 6.  In the 7th, Travis Kahl notched his second hit of the game, a 2-out single but he was left stranded on a foul out to the catcher as the game hit the 7th inning stretch.  DeChaine, who battled his way to a Complete Game Win in the first round against Waconia, gave way to Mark Kahl to start the bottom of the 7th.  Kahl was able to set the Buttermakers down in order to complete the 7th.  In the top of the 8th, Aaron Weber doubled down the right field line with 1 out, but Christopher got back-to-back strikeouts to leave Weber at 2nd.  Max Zwart lined a single up the middle for Hadley to begin the 8th but then Mark Kahl got Trent Carlson to hit into a huge 5-4-3 double play.  After a walk, a ground out to Lane Girtz put an end to the 8th.  Still holding a 7-4 lead going to the 9th, Buckman got a 2-out, pinch-hit single from Shawn Lanners but that was all.  In the bottom of the 9th, Kahl got Chris Halbus to ground out to Jack Suska at shortstop for the first out, the Kahl got pinch-hitter Kellan Johnson on strikes for out #2.  Needing just 1 more out to nail down the win, Jahl ended up hitting Joe Larson with a pitch and then sent him to 2nd with a wild pitch.  Kahl then walked Nick Bruning to put 2 men on base and bring the potential tying run to the plate.  Blake Rogers lined a single to center to score Larson and make it 7-5. Now the Buttermakers had the winning run at the plate and their cleanup hitter in the batters box in Max Zwart.  Zwart belted a 2-2 offering from Kahl to deep right-center, but Buckman centerfielder Matt Tautges sprinted over and ended the game with a fine running catch just in front of the warning track to finalize Buckman’s 7-5 victory.  Buckman will next play on Saturday, September 1st at 1:30 pm in Shakopee. They will face the winner of the Milroy Yankees vs Lake City Serpents game. Those two teams play their 2nd round game on Sunday at 1:30 in Shakopee.
