The Aitkin Steam scored a run in each of the first 6 innings and used that steady offense, and a 15 strikeout pitching performance from Jeremy Janzen, to beat the St. Mathias Devils 6-5 on Sunday.  The Devils scored in the top of the 1st when Hunter Wicklund singled and eventually scored on an error.  The Steam got that run back in the bottom of the 1st when Taylor Whiteoak singles, then was wild pitched to 2nd, to 3rd and then home.  In the bottom of the 2nd, Aitkin got a walk from Max Onyx, then a stolen base, with Jake Hyytinnen singling to drive in Onyx and make it 2-1.  In the top of the 3rd, the Devils got a double from Gunnar Wicklund and a run-scoring single by Nate Eschenbacher to make it 2-2.  Jake Lynn’s rbi double in the bottom of the 3rd drove in Will Wilson yo make it 3-2.  In the 4th, Aitkin scored again on a Hyytinnen single, a pair of wild pitches and a run-scoring ground out by Drew Alison to give the Steam a 4-2 lead after 4.  In the 5th, Taylor Whiteoak doubled and then scored on a single by Quin Miller and it was 5-2.  The Devils rallied for 2 runs in the top of the 6th when an error allowed 2 runs to score and Aitkin’s lead was trimmed to 5-4.  In the bottom of the 6th, Drew Olson singled, moved up a base on an error, followed by a walk to Taylor Whiteoak. A sacrifice fly by Brian Burman gave the Steam a 6-4 lead after 6.  After a scoreless 7th and 8th, the Devils got a run in the top of the 9th when Hunter Wicklund singled, stole 2nd and scored on an error to make it 6-5, but that’s as close as Jeremy Janzen would allow it to get, retiring the final two hitters to end the game with a 6-5 Aitkin victory.
