The Buckman Billygoats wrapped up a 12-1 regular season with a 10-6 come-from-behind victory over the Pierz Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at Hellie Field.  The Bulldogs put a run on the board in the bottom of the 1st When Peter Schommer lined a 2-out singe to right, followed by a single to left by Chuck Boser  With men at the corners, the Bulldogs executed a double steal with Boser swiping 2nd and Schommer coming home on the back end to give Pierz a 1-0 lead.  After a scoreless 2nd inning, Pierz used 4 Buckman errors, an Austin Dickmann rbi ground-out and rbi singles from Ryan Foreman and Brandon Dickmann to score 3 runs in the 3rd and and take a 4-0 lead.  Pierz starter Jonah Prokott sailed through the first 3 innings, retiring all 9 Buckman batters he faced but in the top of the 4th, Travis Kahl led off with a walk, Lane Girtz was hit by a pitch to put 2 men aboard.  Prokott then got a ground ball to 1st and an infield pop fly to produce a couple of quick outs.  The Billygoats were still without a hit off Prokott until Joe Kahl boomed a 2-run double to right-center to drive in Travis Kahl and Lane Girtz and make it 4-2.  After Prokott issued a walk to the next hitter, Shawn Lanners, the Bulldogs brought in Austin Dickmann to pitch.  He got out of the inning with a ground out to shortstop Peter Schommer.  The Bulldogs got 1 of those runs back in the bottom of the 4th when Craig Luberts got hit by a Shawn Lanners pitch with 1 out.  A Dylan Kummet base hit and a walk loaded the bases.  An error allowed Luberts to score and make it 5-2 before Lanners got a strikeout and a grounder to shortstop to leave the bases loaded after 4 innings.  Both teams were retired 1-2-3 in the 5th inning.  In the top of the 6th, Lane Girtz led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch.  Matt Kummet then doubled to right to score Girtz and make it 5-3.  Aaron Weber then singled and Buckman had men at the corners with no outs.  An attempted double steal resulted in Weber being thrown out at 2nd by Bulldogs catcher Ryan Foreman, but Matt Kummet came in to score and the score of 5-4.  Buckman would then load the bases with a walk to Joe Kahl, a single by Shawn Lanners and a walk to Lukas Otte.  After that walk, Peter Schommer took over on the mound from Austin Dickmann.  A ground ball to 2nd off the bat of Andrew Rueckert resulted in a force out  with 1 run scoring to tie the game and when the throw to 1st sailed over 1st and out of play, another run scored to give Buckman a 6-5 lead.  In the bottom of the 6th, Shawn Lanners once again set the Bulldogs down in order, giving him a string of 8 in a row retired.  In the top of the 7th,  Schommer would walk the bases full, but get out of trouble with a pop up to 2nd baseman Chuck Boser to keep it a 6-5 game.  Aaron Weber took over pitching duties for the Billygoats in the bottom of the 7th, allowing a lead-off walk to Peter Schommer and a single to Chuck Boser.  A wild pitch then advanced both runners into scoring position with no outs.  But that was it for the Bulldogs rally as Weber then struck out the next 3 batters to end the threat.  In the top of the 8th, Peter Schommer got a strikeout to start the inning, then gave up a hit to Andrew Rueckert.  Pinch-hitter Noah Cekalla then bounced into a 5-4-3 inning-ending double play.
The Bulldogs took a lead-off walk to Derek Schommer to begin the bottom of the 8th.  That brought up Craig Luberts, who's always been one of the top bunters in the League.  Buckman, well aware of that fact, had the bunt defended. But the ball was mishandled for a Billygoats error, as Schommer moved up to 2nd and Luberts was safe at 1st with no outs. Dylan Kummet then came up and also put down a sacrifice bunt, producing an out for Buckman but also moving the potential tying and go-ahead runs into scoring position.  Ryan Foreman, who had delivered an rbi single earlier in the game, drove in the tying run with a ground ball to short, scoring Derek Schommer, advancing Luberts to 3rd and tying the game at 6-6.  Weber fanned Peter Schommer to end the 8th and strand the go-ahead run at 3rd.  The game moved to the 9th tied at 6-6.  Buckman had the top of their order due up and Peter Schommer got the inning started with a strikeout.  Lane Girtz then got on base with an infield single.  Matt Kummet then bounced a single to center to put two men on base.  Aaron Weber then hit a ground ball to shortstop that had the potential to be a double play, but instead the ball was mishandled, skipping into center field and Lane Girtz raced home with the go-ahead run to make it 7-6.  With Kummet and Weber on base, Joe Kahl then blasted the first pitch he saw over the fence in dead center field for a 3-run Homer to push the lead to 10-6.  A fly out to left and a strikeout ended the inning, but the serious damage had been done.  In the bottom of the 9th, Aaron Weber got a ground out to 1st and then back-to-back strikeouts to finish off the 10-6 Billygoats victory.  Buckman finishes the regular season with a Victory League best 12-1 record while the Bulldogs finish up 7-6.  Both teams now set their sights on the East Division Playoffs next weekend.  Top-seeded Buckman will host the #4 seeded Royalton Riverdogs next Saturday morning at 11:00 am.  The 3rd seeded Bulldogs will play the #2 seeded Pierz Lakers on Saturday in their first round game at Hellie Field.
