The Freeport Black Sox locked in the #2 seed in the upcoming South Division Playoffs with an 11-1 win at St. Wendel on Sunday.  And they got going early against the Saints with a 2-run double from Alex Martinez and an rbi single by Nate Mettenburg in the top of the 1st to go up 3-0.  That score remained intact until the top of the 6th when both Carter Sawyer and Brandon Sawyer began the inning with walks, followed by an Alex Martinez rbi single.  Ike Sawyer then drove in another 2 runs with a hit to make it 6-0, and the Sox added 1 more run in the 6th on Jake Braeglemann's rbi single and Freeport had a 7-0 lead.  Freeport starter Mitch Reller, who has been spectacular at times this season, was cruising along with a no-hitter until Jordon Gombos led off the bottom of the 6th with the Saints first hit.  Steven Benkowski followed with another hit, and the Saints then got on the board with a Cole Wunderlich fielders choice to drive in Gombos and make it 7-1 after 6 innings.  St. Wendel nearly scored again an inning later when Tyler Huls beat out a bunt single with 1 out, went to 2nd on a ground out but was thrown out at the plate on a Jordon Gombos single to end the inning.  In the top of the 8th, Ike Sawyer, Cody Rose and Dylan Carlson had singles to make it 8-1.  Trevor Sawyer doubled to drive in a run and it was 9-1.  A Bryan Benson sacrifice fly made it 10-1 and the Black Sox then were the recipient of a balk to force in the final run to make it 11-1.  In the bottom of the 8th with Edwin Zambrona taking over from Reller, Hunter Welle reached base on a 2-out error but a ground out then finished off the game for the 11-1 victory for Freeport.  Freeport finishes 7-5 and will host #3 seed St. Stephen in the first round of the Playoffs next Saturday night at 7:30 pm at Black Sox Park. St. Wendel does not qualify for the South Division Playoffs and ends their 2019 season with a record of 0-12.  But good job by high-schooler Tyler Huls for picking up the Managerial reigns of the Saints and although it was a struggle at times, you kept a respected and valuable Victory League franchise afloat.
