The Randall Cubs are headed to the Region 8C Tournament on the strength of an 8-7 come-from-behind win over the Flensburg Falcons on Saturday in Randall.
One of the outstanding young players in the Victory League, Travis Wenzel, got things going again for the Falcons from the lead-off spot when he Homered off Cubs starter Kyle Peterschick to make it 1-0. Peterschick would register just 1 out before being relieved by Cody Meyer. Randall came right back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st off Falcons starter Ike Thoma. Kyle Peterschick bunted his way on base, moved to 2nd on an error and then to 3rd on a ground out by Rick Drew. With 2 outs, Cody Meyer doubled to drive in Peterschick and make it 1-1. Matt Otremba then hit a grounder that was misplayed for an error, allowing Meyer to score and give the Cubs a 2-1 lead after 1 inning.
Flensburg then erupted for 5 runs in the top off the 2nd to go up 6-2. Andrew Marod reached on an error, followed by a Cody Meyer strikeout of Brady Shelstad. Another strikeout of Bob Wenzel produced the second out with Marod still at 1st. Meyer then hit Wesley Waytashek with a pitch to put two men on base. After a walk to Travis Wenzel loaded the bases, Braden Backowski then singled to drive in Marod and make it 2-2. Up stepped Ike Thoma, who launched a Grand Slam Homer to left to bring in Waytashek, Backowski and Wenzel and give the Falcons a 6-2 lead.
From that point on, the game seemed to settle down as the score remained 6-2 heading into the 7th inning stretch. That's when Randall was able to tie things up again with a couple of weird plays involved. Kyle Peterschick reached on a 1-out error. Rick Drew then walked to put two men on base. Dane Couture then came in to pinch-run for Drew at 1st. Cody Meyer then got hit by a pitch to load the bases with 1 out. Matt Otremba then singled to left, scoring Peterschick to make it 6-3 and keeping the bases loaded. Brett Strack then grounded into a fielders choice, allowing Dane Couture to score to cut the lead to 6-4, with 2 men on and but still just 1 out. Cody Meyer scored on an error to make it 6-5, then Sam Nagel's rbi single brought in Brett Strack to make it 6-6.
Ike Thoma then issued a walk to Tommy Kunkel. Josh Jennings then hit a bouncer to 2nd baseman Travis Wenzel, who relayed the ball to 2nd for a force out, with the pivot throw back to 1st to complete the double play missing it' mark, allowing Sam Nagel to score the apparent go-ahead run and give the Cubs a 7-6 lead. But the runner sliding into 2nd was ruled to have committed a malicious slide and the umpires ruled the double play was complete, negating the Nagel run and keeping it a 6-6 game after 7 innings.
In the top of the 8th, Josh Genske led off with a single for the Falcons, but was erased on a force play off the bat of Dylan Lukasavitz. Andrew Marod came up and blasted a pitch over the fence for an apparent 2-run Homer. But in the excitement of the moment, Marod was ruled to have surpassed Lukasavitz on the base paths between 1st and 2nd and was ruled out, with only the Lukasavitz run counting, so instead of 8-6, the Falcons led only 7-6 when the top of the 8th concluded.
In the bottom of the 8th, Caleb Strack led off with a single to center. Kyle Peterschick then bounced out to 1st baseman Bob Wenzel, moving Strack to 2nd with 1 out. Rick Drew followed with a walk to put two men on base with 1 out. With Cody Meyer at the plate, a wild pitch from Ike Thoma advanced Strack to 3rd and Drew to 2nd. Cody Meyer then grounded out to 2nd, with both base runners holding their ground. Matt Otremba then walked and Randall had the bases loaded with 2 outs and trailing 7-6. Brett Strack then lined a single to right, delivering the tying and go-ahead runs, as Caleb Strack and Rick Drew crossed home plate and Randall led 8-7 going to the 9th.
With Brett Strack out to begin his 3rd inning of relief to start the 9th, he got Bob Wenzel to pop out to Rick Drew at 1st base. Wesley Waytashek then grounded out to 3rd baseman Sam Nagel for the second out. Travis Wenzel then kept the Falcons season and hopes alive with a single to put the potential tying run on base with 2 outs. But Braden Backowski's ground ball to shortstop Matt Otremba finished off the game and the Cubs 8-7 win and a berth in the Region 8C Tournament. The loss ends the season for Flensburg. Randall will now play at Upsala for the West Division Championship on Sunday with a 1:00 pm scheduled start and a 4:00 pm game if necessary.
